It
is altogether correct in the translation. Now, you know that of late some malicious
and corrupt men have sprung up and apostatized from the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints, and they declare that the Prophet believes in a plurality
of Gods, and, lo and behold! we have discovered a very great secret, they cry
-- "The Prophet says there are many Gods, and this proves that he has
fallen."
It
has been my intention for a long time to take up this subject and lay it clearly
before the people, and show what my faith is in relation to this interesting
matter. I have contemplated the saying of Jesus (Luke 17th chapter,
26th verse) -- "And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in
the days of the Son of Man." And if it does rain, I'll preach this doctrine,
for the truth shall be preached.
I
will preach on the plurality of Gods. I have selected this text for that express
purpose. I wish to declare I have always and in all congregations when I have
preach on the subject of the Deity, it has been the plurality of Gods.
It
has been preached by the Elders for fifteen years. I have always declared God to be a distinct
personage, Jesus Christ a separate and distinct personage from God the Father,
and the Holy Ghost was a distinct personage and a Spirit: and these three
constitute three distinct personages and three Gods. If this is in accordance
with the New Testament, lo and behold! we have three Gods anyhow, and they are
plural; and who can contradict it?
Our
text says, "And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His
Father." The Apostles have
discovered that there were Gods above, for John says God was the Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ. My object was to preach the scriptures, and preach the
doctrine they contain, there being a God above, the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ. I am bold to declare I have taught all the stronger doctrines in public
than in private.
John
was one of the men, and apostles declare they were made kings and priests unto
God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It reads just so in the Revelation,
Hence the doctrine of a plurality of Gods is as prominent in the Bible as any
other doctrine. It is all over the face of the Bible. It stands beyond the
power of controversy. A wayfaring man, though a fool, need not err therein.
Paul
says there are Gods many and Lords many. I want to set it forth in a plain and
simple manner; but to us there is but one God -- that is pertaining to us; and
he is in all and through all. But if Joseph Smith says there are Gods many and
Lords many, they cry, "Away with him! Crucify him! Crucify him!"
Mankind
verily say that the Scriptures are with them. Search the Scriptures, for they
testify of things that these apostates would gravely pronounce blasphemy. Paul,
if Joseph Smith is a blasphemer, you are. I say there are Gods many and Lords
many, but to us only one, and we are to be in subjection to that one, and no
man can limit the bounds or the eternal existence of eternal time. Hath he
beheld the eternal world, and is he authorized to say that there is only one
God? He makes himself a fool if he thinks or says so, and there is and end of
his career or progress in knowledge. He cannot obtain all knowledge, for he has
sealed up the gate to it.
Some
say I do not interpret the Scripture the same as they do. They say it means the
heathen's gods. Paul says there are Gods many and Lords many; and that makes a
plurality of Gods, in spite of the whims of all men. Without a revelation, I am
no going to give them the knowledge of the God of heaven. You know and I
testify that Paul had no allusion to the heathen gods. I have it from God, and
get over it if you can. I have a witness of the Holy Ghost, and a testimony
that Paul had no allusion to the heathen gods in the text. I will show from the
Hebrew Bible that I am correct, and the first word shows a plurality of Gods;
and I want the apostates and learned men to come here and prove to the
contrary, if they can. An unlearned boy must give you a little Hebrew.
Berosheit baurau Eloheim ait aushamayeen vehau auraits, rendered by King James'
translators, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
I want to analyze the word Berosheit. Rosh, the head; Sheit, a grammatical
termination; the Baith was not originally put there when the inspired man wrote
it, but it has been since added by an old Jew. Baurau signifies to bring forth;
Eloheim is from the word Eloi, God, in the singular number; and by adding the
word heim, it renders it Gods. It read first, "In the beginning he head of
the Gods brought forth the Gods," or, as other have translated it,
"The head of the Gods called the Gods together." I want to show a
little learning as well as other fools. A little learning is a dangerous thing. Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring. There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, And
drinking largely sobers us up again. All
this confusion among professed translators is for want of drinking another draught.
The
head God organized the heavens and the earth. I defy all the world to refute me. In the
beginning the heads of the Gods organized the heavens and the earth. Now the
learned priests and the people rage, and the heathen imagine a vain thing. If
we pursue the Hebrew text further, it reads, "The head one of the Gods
said, Let us make a man in our own image," I once asked a learned Jew,
"If the Hebrew language compels us to render all words ending in heim in
the plural, why not render the first Eloheim plural?" He replied, "That
is the rule with few exceptions; but in this case it would ruin the Bible."
He acknowledged I was right. I came here to investigate these things precisely
as I believe them. Hear and judge for yourselves; and if you go away satisfied,
well and good.
In
the very beginning the Bible shows there is a plurality of Gods beyond the power
of refutation. It is a great subject I am dwelling on. The word Eloheim ought
to be in the plural all the way through -- Gods. The heads of the Gods appointed
one God for us; and when you take [that] view of the subject, its sets one free
to see all the beauty, holiness and perfection of the Gods. All I want is to
get the simple, naked truth, and the whole truth.
Many
men say there is one God; the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are only one
God. I say that is a strange God anyhow -- three in one, and one in three! It is a curious organization. "Father, I
pray not for the world, but I pray for them which thou hast given me."
"Holy Father, keep through Thine own name those whom thou hast given me,
that they may be one as we are." All are to be crammed into one God,
according to sectarianism. It would make the biggest God in all the world. He
would be a wonderfully big God -- he would be a giant or a monster. I want to
read the text to you myself -- "I am agreed with the Father and the Father
is agreed with me, and we are agreed as one." The Greek shows that it
should be agreed. "Father, I pray for them which Thou hast given me out of
the world, and not for those alone, but for them also which shall believe on me
through their word, that they all may be agreed, as Thou, Father, are with me,
and I with Thee, that they also may be agreed with us," and all come to
dwell in unity, and in all the glory and everlasting burnings of the Gods; and
then we shall see as we are seen, and be as our God and He as His Father. I
want to reason a little on this subject. I learned it by translating the
papyrus which is now in my house. I
learned a testimony concerning Abraham, and he reasoned concerning the God of
heaven. "In order to do that," said he, "suppose we have two
facts: that supposes another fact may exist -- two men on the earth, one wise
than the other, would logically show that another who is wiser than the wisest
may exist. Intelligences exist one above another, so that there is no end to them."
If
Abraham reasoned thus -- If Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and John discovered
that God the Father of Jesus Christ had a Father, you may suppose that He had a
Father also. Where was there ever a son without a father? And where was there
ever a father without first being a son? Whenever did a tree or anything spring
into existence without a progenitor? And everything comes in this way. Paul
says that which is earthly is in the likeness of that which is heavenly, Hence
if Jesus had a Father, can we not believe that He had a Father also? I despise
the idea of being scared to death at such a doctrine, for the Bible is full of
it.
I
want you to pay particular attention to what I am saying. Jesus said that the
Father wrought precisely in the same way as His Father had done before Him. As
the Father had done before? He laid down His life, and took it up the same as
His Father had done before. He did as He was sent, to lay down His life and
take it up again; and then was committed unto Him the keys. I know it is good
reasoning.
I
have reason to think that the Church is being purged. I saw Satan fall from heaven, and the way they
ran was a caution. All these are wonders
and marvels in our eyes in these last days. So long as men are under the law of
God, they have no fears -- they do not scare themselves.
I
want to stick to my text, to show that when men open their lips against these
truths they do not injure me, but injure themselves. To the law and to the
testimony, for these principles are poured out all over the Scriptures. When things that are of the greatest
importance are passed over by the weak-minded men without even a thought, I
want to see truth in all its bearings and hug it to my bosom. I believe all
that God ever revealed, and I never hear of a man being damned for believing
too much; but they are damned for unbelief.
They
found fault with Jesus Christ because He said He was the Son of God, and made
Himself equal with God. They say of me, like they did of the Apostles of old,
that I must be put down. What did Jesus say? "Is it not written in your law,
I said, Ye are Gods? If He called them Gods unto whom the word of God came, and
the Scriptures cannot be broken, say ye of Him whom the Father hath sanctified
and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said I am the Son of
God?" It was through Him that they drank of the spiritual rock. Of course
He would take the honor to Himself. Jesus, if they were called Gods unto whom
the word of God came, why should it be thought blasphemy that I should say I am
the Son of God?
Go
and read the vision in the Book of Covenants. There is clearly illustrated glory
upon glory -- one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and a glory of
the stars; and as one star differeth from another star in glory, even so do
they of the telestial world differ in glory, and every man who reigns in celestial
glory is a God to his dominions. By the apostates admitting the testimony of
the Doctrine and Covenants they damn themselves. Paul, what do you say? They
impeached Paul and all went and left him.
Paul
had seven churches, and they drove him off from among them; and yet they cannot
do it by me. I rejoice in that. My testimony is good.
Paul
says, "There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another
glory of the stars; for one star differeth from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the
dead." They who obtain a glorious resurrection from the dead, are exalted
far above principalities, powers, thrones, dominions and angels, and are
expressly declared to be heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ, all
having eternal power. These Scriptures
are a mixture of very strange doctrines to the Christian world, who are blindly
led by the blind. I will refer to another Scripture.
"Now,"
says God, when He visited Moses in the bush, (Moses was a stammering sort of a
boy like me) God said, "Thou shalt be a God unto the children of Israel."
God said, "Thou shalt be a God unto Aaron, and he shall be thy spokesman."
I believe those Gods that God reveals as Gods to be sons of God, and all can
cry, "Abba, Father!" Sons of God who exalt themselves to be Gods, even
from before the foundation of the world, and are the only Gods I have a reverence
for.
John
said he was a king. "And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and
the first begotten of the dead, and the Prince of the kings of the earth. Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from
our sins in His own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God, and His
Father; to him be glory and dominion forever and ever, Amen." Oh, Thou God
who art King of kings and Lord of lords, the sectarian world, by their actions,
declare, "We cannot believe Thee."
The
old Catholic church traditions are worth more than all you have said. Here is a
principle of logic that most men have no more sense than to adopt. I will illustrate
it by an old apple tree. Here jumps off a branch and says, I am the true tree,
and you are corrupt. If the whole tree is corrupt, are not its branches
corrupt? If the Catholic religion is a false religion, how can any true
religion come out of it? If the Catholic church is bad, how can any good thing
come out of it? The character of the old churches have always been slandered by
all apostates since the world began.
I
testify again, as the Lord lives, God never will acknowledge any traitors or apostates.
Any man who will betray the Catholics will betray you; and if he will betray
me, he will betray you. All men are liars who say they are of the true Church
without the revelations of Jesus Christ and the Priesthood of Melchizedek,
which is after the order of the Son of God.
It
is in the order of heavenly things that God should always send a new dispensation
into the world when men have apostatized from the truth and lost the
priesthood, but when men come out and build upon other men's foundations, they
do it on their own responsibility, without authority from God; and when the
floods come and the winds blow, their foundations will be found to be sand, and
their whole fabric will crumble to dust.
Did
I build on any other man's foundation? I have got all the truth which the Christian
world possessed, and an independent revelation in the bargain, and God will bear
me off triumphant. I will drop this subject. I wish I could speak for three or
four hours; but it is not expedient on account of the rain; I would still go
on, and show you proof upon proofs; all the Bible is equal in support of this
doctrine, one part as another. (Joseph
Smith, DHC 6:473-479, June 16, 1844.)
Wives to Be One With Husbands
Heber C. Kimball
How long is it going to take you to become men and women
of God, and to honor your calling? When
you fight against your leaders, or against the head of a branch, do you not see
that you are fighting against your head?
It is the same as a child’s fight against its mother, for when it does
so, it is fighting against its own existence…
Now, if I have a woman who says
that she has no love for plurality, I do not think that there could be much
affections towards her. And when there
is affection, such a woman would soon banish it all. Suppose she has no love, no attachment, can
she expect the affection of her husband?
Can a graft grow to a tree unless its nature is congenial to that of the
tree in which it is grafted? Say that one man gives me a graft from his tree,
and that I get hundreds of grafts from other trees, and that they are all
grafted into my tree, then if they partake of the nourishment and fatness that
are in the tree, they will certainly grow, but if they alienate themselves,
they will wither and drop off…
And if my wife wants to be one with
me, she must let her will and affections center in me, just as if I were a vine
and my wife a branch; then where is there room or occasion for confusion? Were such universally the case do you not
think that we could raise up a still better posterity?
When wives become one with their
husbands, then there is no evil interruption, children will be begotten, born
and reared under greatly improved influences. The Holy Ghost will rest upon and
dwell with the parents, and their offspring will be mighty and godlike. I would not give much for a man nor a woman
that does not enjoy the fellowship of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost. If I do not have the Holy Ghost,
I shall not produce the fruit that is designed by the holy order of
matrimony. Mary, the mother of Jesus,
was a pure woman, and was ordained and designed to bear the Son of God, because
no woman in her sins was worthy of performing that work. How long will it be before we will have
children filled with the Holy Ghost from their birth, who will grow up
steadfast in the truth, even sons and daughters of God? No woman entering into this holy order should
do so without she has the Holy Ghost, and she should ever after keep it, that
her nourishment, example, and teachings may always partake of the life-giving
principles of that Spirit.
Stop all wickedness, all your
quarreling, and all unholy divorces.
Some women will marry a man one day, and call for a divorce the
next. They are playing with the things
of God, and are sealing their own damnation.
Some women get married and then run after other men; and some men get
married and run after other women. What
are such persons doing? They are sealing
their own damnation. On the other hand,
every man and woman that will not yield to passion, nor to any evil practice or
principle, will become filled with the Spirit of God, and it will pass from one
to another. This is why, as I have often
said, I love Brother Brigham better than I do any woman upon this earth,
because my will has run into his, and his into mine, and there is a free
interchange of feelings. There are but
few men that will do that, for they generally want their own way and their own
will, therefore their wills do not run into ours and the Father’s. This free interchange of pure feelings should
run through all the organizations in this Church, and through every member in
every family throughout all our borders.
I have been trying to tell you how
you may raise children to hold the Priesthood and be holy unto the Lord; and if
all would take a right and proper course in regard to rearing children, from
the commencement until they are grown up, and not take a course to weary the
tree while it is maturing fruit, many would do far better than they now
do. Many who have but one wife, and
several of those who have more than one, take a course to excite adultery, and
what is much worse, they often take that course at the most improper and unwise
times, and thereby seriously injure their offspring. If righteous husbands and wives will pursue a
righteous course in this matter, their children will be much less subject to
lustful desires, and will enter into the holy bonds of matrimony with a view to
keep the commandment and raise up a pure posterity. For this purpose, God instituted the
plurality of wives. (J. of D. 4:276-277)
MARRIAGE & MORALS IN UTAH
Parley P. Pratt
Read in the Fillmore, House of Representatives,
31 December 1855
(Millennial Star, 18:337-338)
Mr. President and Gentlemen:
At the opening of the present
session of our annual Legislature I had the honor of being unanimously chosen
Chaplain of the Council.
I was then and there laid under a
solemn oath to faithfully perform the duties of this high and holy calling to the
best of my abilities, and was also solemnly charged by the honorable President,
Mr. Kimball, not merely to be fervent in prayer during the session, but also to
contribute my mite in molding the moral and social institutions of our common
country.
In accordance with these sacred
responsibilities placed upon me, I have, with some pains, prepared this
address, which I am extremely happy in having the privilege of laying before
you; not merely, or principally for your sakes; but for the sake of the people
of our Territory—our nation, and the world.
As our young and rising territory
is about preparing to enter upon her sovereignty as a free and independent
republic, and assume her place amid the family of American States, it becomes
her citizens, and especially those engaged in founding her institutions to
purify themselves and to come together with pure hearts and clean hands; and
clothed with light as a garment, lay a constitutional foundation, and make or
adopt such laws as will tend to purify and exalt the people,--establish
righteousness and peace and multiply and perpetuate a nation of freemen in the
highest degree of moral, intellectual and physical development.
No time-saving, or mere temporary
policy should enter into our composition, or influence us for one moment. We act, not merely or principally for
ourselves or the living age; but for untold millions of posterity, and for ages
yet unborn; who doubtless will be influenced by our institutions, and mold
their morals, manners, precepts and even their consciences more or less after
the pattern we set them.
A wholesome and moral atmosphere,
and a conscience purified and enlightened by the Spirit of truth are
indispensably necessary to a permanent nation growth and to the strength and
perpetuity of institutions.
The All-Wise Creator, the God of
Nature, has implanted in the human heart certain affections, which, under
proper culture and direction, give rise to family ties, hence the necessity and
importance of the moral and social relations and the institutions for their
proper direction and government.
‘Tis nature’s universal law, and
the first and great commandment with blessing, that each and every species
should multiply and fill the measure of its creation. Hence the growth of families—the germs of
nations—and hence, as we before observed, the necessity of laws founded in
wisdom, to guard as it were, the fountain and issues of life.
In short—moral and social
affections and institutions are the very foundation of all government, whether
of family, church or state. If these are
perverted, or founded in error, the whole superstructure is radically wrong, and
will contain within itself the seeds of its own decay and dissolution. These facts are not only self-evident, but
are according to all experience being exemplified in the decadence and
dissolution of nations and empires of old, as well as in the general weakness
and corruption so characteristic of men and things in more modern times.
The prophet Isaiah, in looking
through the vista of long distant years, at length beholds the vision of modern
“Christendom”, or of the corruption growing out of Roman sway. He exclaims (ISA 24:5): “The earth also is
defiled under her inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws,
changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.”
We here inquire: What laws were
transgressed? What ordinance was
changed? And what everlasting covenant
was broken—the effect of which would defiled the very earth under its
inhabitants? This leads us back, in our
researches, to the earliest institutions, laws, ordinances, covenants, and
precedents on record touching marriage and the moral and social relations.
If we find laws, statutes,
covenants, and precedents emanating from God; sworn to by Himself to be
everlasting; as a blessing to all nations; if we find these have to do with
exceeding multiplicity of the race, and with family and national organization and
increase; is such institutions are older than Moses, and are found perpetuated
and unimpaired by Moses, and the Prophets—Jesus and the Apostles, then it will
appear evident, that they were intended to be perpetual; and that no merely
human legislation or authority, whether proceeding from emperor, king, or
people has a right to change, alter, or pervert them.
It will then remain to be shown by
whom these institutions were changed or perverted; the direful effect of such
change upon the nations; and the only course left for those who would survive
the crash of nations and the wreck of worlds.
Our object, gentlemen, is to urge
upon the statesmen and the people of, at least one state or government of our
earth to avoid the rock and quicksand on which so many have made shipwreck—to
restore the laws, the ordinance, and the everlasting covenant of our God that
her citizens may be purified and preserved by the same; and her institutions,
being founded in truth, may be perpetuated forever…
Purposes of Temples—Sealings May Be Performed
Elsewhere
Another thing: I was lately called
upon as a witness—perhaps you may have seen some account of it in the
papers—and I want to make some explanation in relation to the matters that I
then presented, because they are not generally understood: I was required not
to divulge certain things. I did not
know them to divulge. Perhaps some of
you have had people come to you with their confidences. I have.
But I don’t want to be confidant.
Why? Because if they made a
confidant of me and I was called before a tribunal, I could not, as an
honorable man, reveal their confidences, yet it would be said I was a transgressor
of law; but no honorable man can reveal confidences that are committed to
him. Therefore I tell them to keep their
own secrets, and remember what is called the Mormon Creed, “Mind Your Own
Business.” I don’t want to know the
secrets of people, that those I cannot tell.
And I could not tell very much tot hat court; for I have studiously
avoided knowing any more than I could possibly help about such matters. I was asked questions about our temple, which
of course I could not divulge. I was
asked questions about records, which I could not tell them, because I did not
know. I have studiously avoided entering
into a knowledge of these matters. They
did not build our temples. We have never
had revelations from God, through them!
We may have had from the devil (laughter), but never have had
revelations from God through them. And I
think there are some things we have a right to guard sacredly in our own
bosoms. We are told “The secret of the
Lord is with them.

Discourse by President Brigham Young, delivered in the Tabernacle,
Great Salt Lake City, February 8, 1857
Great Salt Lake City, February 8, 1857
I feel myself somewhat under
obligations to come here and talk to the people, inasmuch as I have absented
myself for some time, and others have occupied this stand.
Perhaps I will not talk to you
long, but I desire to pursue some of the ideas that brother Cummings has just
laid before you. I can testify that every word he has spoken is true, even to
the advancement of the Saints at a "small gallop." Though that is
rather a novel expression, still it is true, as well as all the rest which he
advanced.
The items that have been advanced
are principles of real doctrine, whether you consider them so or not. It is one
of the first principles of the doctrine of salvation to become acquainted with
our Father and our God. The Scriptures teach that this is eternal life, to
"know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent;"
this is as much as to say that no man can enjoy or be prepared for eternal life
without that knowledge.
You hear a great deal of preaching
upon this subject; and when people repent of their sins, they will get
together, and pray and exhort each other, and try to get the spirit of
revelation, try to have God their Father revealed to them, that they may know
Him and become acquainted with Him.
There are some plain, simple facts
that I wish to tell you, and I have but one desire in this, which is, that you
should have understanding to receive them, to treasure them up in your hearts,
to contemplate upon these facts, for they are simple facts, based upon natural
principles; there is no mystery about them when once understood.
I want to tell you, each and every
one of you, that you are well acquainted with God our heavenly Father, or the
great Eloheim. You are all well
acquainted with Him, for there is not a soul of you but what has lived in His
house and dwelt with Him year after year; and yet you are seeking to become
acquainted with Him, when the fact is, you have merely forgotten what you did
know. I told you a little last Sabbath about forgetting things.
There is not a person here to-day
but what is a son or a daughter of that Being. In the spirit world their
spirits were first begotten and brought forth, and they lived there with their
parents for ages before they came here. This, perhaps, is hard for many to
believe, but it is the greatest nonsense in the world not to believe it. If you
do not believe it, cease to call Him Father; and when you pray, pray to some
other character.
It would be inconsistent in you to
disbelieve what I think you know, and then to go home and ask the Father to do
so and so for you. The Scriptures which we believe have taught us from the
beginning to call Him our Father, and we have been taught to pray to Him as our
Father, in the name of our eldest brother whom we call Jesus Christ, the
Saviour of the world; and that Saviour, while here on earth, was so explicit on
the point that he taught his disciples to call no man on earth father, for we
have one which is in heaven. He is the Saviour, because it is his right to redeem
the remainder of the family pertaining to the flesh on this earth, if any of
you do not believe this, tell us how and what we should believe. If I am not
telling you the truth, please to tell me the truth on this subject, and let me
know more than I do know. If it is hard for you to believe, if you wish to be
Latter-day Saints, admit the fact as I state it, and do not contend against it.
Try to believe it, because you will never become acquainted with our Father,
never enjoy the blessings of His Spirit, never be prepared to enter into His
presence, until you most assuredly believe it; therefore you had better try to
believe this great mystery about God.
I do not marvel that the world is
clad in mystery, to them He is an unknown God; they cannot tell where He dwells
nor how He lives, nor what kind of a being He is in appearance or character.
They want to become acquainted with His character and attributes, but they know
nothing of them. This is in consequence of the apostasy that is now in the
world.
They have departed from the
knowledge of God, transgressed His laws, changed His ordinances, and broken the
everlasting covenant, so that the whole earth is defiled under the inhabitants
thereof. Consequently it is no mystery to us that the world knoweth not God,
but it would be a mystery to me, with what I now know, to say that we cannot
know anything of Him. We are His children.
To bring the truth of this matter
close before you, I will instance your fathers who made the first permanent
settlement in New England. There are a good many in this congregation whose
fathers landed upon Plymouth Rock in the year 1620. Those fathers began to
spread abroad; they had children, those children had children, and their
children had children, and here are we their children. I am one of them, and
many of this congregation belong to that class. Now ask yourselves this simple
question upon natural principles, has the species altered? Were not the people
who landed at Plymouth Rock the same species with us?
Were they not organized as we are?
Were not their countenances similar to ours? Did they not converse, have
knowledge, read books? Were there not mechanics among them, and did they not
understand agriculture, &c., as we do? Yes, every person admits this.
Now follow our fathers further back
and take those who first came to the island of Great Britain, were they the
same species of beings as those who came to America? Yes, all acknowledge this;
this is upon natural principles. Thus you may continue and trace the human
family back to Adam and Eve, and ask, "are we of the same species with
Adam and Eve?"
Yes, every person acknowledges
this; this comes within the scope of our understanding.
But when we arrive at that point, a
veil is dropt, and our knowledge is cut off. Were it not so, you could trace
back your history to the Father of our spirits in the eternal world. He is a
being of the same species as ourselves; He lives as we do, except the
difference that we are earthly, and He is heavenly. He has been earthly, and is
of precisely the same species of being that we are. Whether Adam is the
personage that we should consider our heavenly Father, or not, is considerable
of a mystery to a good many. I do not care for one moment how that is; it is no
matter whether we are to consider Him our God, or whether His Father, or His
Grandfather, for in either case we are of one species--of one family--and Jesus
Christ is also of our species.
You may hear the divines of the day
extol the character of the Saviour, undertake to exhibit his true character
before the people, and give an account of his origin, and were it not
ridiculous, I would tell what I have thought about their views. Brother Kimball
wants me to tell it, therefore you will excuse me if I do. I have frequently
thought of mules, which you know are half horse and half ass, when reflecting
upon the representations made by those divines. I have heard sectarian priests
undertake to tell the character of the Son of God, and they make him half of
one species and half of another, and I could not avoid thinking at once of the
mule, which is the most hateful creature that ever was made, I believe. You
will excuse me, but I have thus thought many a time.
Now to the facts in the case; all
the difference between Jesus Christ and any other man that ever lived on the
earth, from the days of Adam until now, is simply this, the Father, after He
had once been in the flesh, and lived as we live, obtained His exaltation,
attained to thrones, gained the ascendancy over principalities and powers, and
had the knowledge and power to create--to bring forth and organize the elements
upon natural principles. This He did after His ascension, or His glory, or His
eternity, and was actually classed with the Gods, with the beings who create,
with those who have kept the celestial law while in the flesh, and again
obtained their bodies. Then He was prepared to commence the work of creation,
as the Scriptures teach. It is all here in the Bible; I am not telling you a
word but what is contained in that book.
Things were first created
spiritually; the Father actually begat the spirits, and they were brought forth
and lived with Him. Then He commenced the work of creating earthly tabernacles,
precisely as He had been created in this flesh himself, by partaking of the course
material that was organized and composed this earth, until His system was
charged with it, consequently the tabernacles of His children were organized
from the coarse materials of this earth.
When the time came that His
first-born, the Saviour, should come into the world and take a tabernacle, the
Father came Himself and favoured that spirit with a tabernacle instead of
letting any other man do it.
The Saviour was begotten by the
Father of His spirit, by the same Being who is the Father of our spirits, and
that is all the organic difference between Jesus Christ and you and me. And a
difference there is between our Father and us consists in that He has gained
His exaltation, and has obtained eternal lives. The principle of eternal lives
is an eternal existence, eternal duration, eternal exaltation. Endless are His
kingdoms, endless His thrones and His dominions, and endless are His posterity;
they never will cease to multiply from this time henceforth and forever.
To you who are prepared to enter
into the presence of the Father and the Son, what I am now telling will
eventually be no more strange than are the feelings of a person who returns to
his father's house, brethren, and sisters, and enjoys the society of his old
associates, after an absence of several years upon some distant island. Upon
returning he would be happy to see his father, his relatives and friends. So
also if we keep the celestial law when our spirits go to God who gave them, we
shall find that we are acquainted there and distinctly realize that we know all
about that world.
Tell me that you do not know
anything about God! I will tell you one thing, it would better become you to
lay your hands upon your mouths and them in the dust, and cry, "unclean,
unclean."
Whether you receive these things or
not, I tell you them in simplicity. I
lay them before you like a child, because they are perfectly simple. If you see and understand these things, it
will be by the Spirit of God; you will receive them by no other spirit. No
matter whether they are told to you like the thunderings of the Almighty, or by
simple conversation; if you enjoy the Spirit of the Lord, it will tell you
whether they are right or not.
I am acquainted with my Father. I
am as confident that I understand in part, see in part, and know and am
acquainted with Him in part, as I am that I was acquainted with my earthly
father who died in Quincy, Illinois, after we were driven from Missouri. My
recollection is better with regard to my earthly father than it is in regard to
my heavenly Father; but as to knowing of what species He is, and how He is
organized, and with regard to His existence, I understand it in part as well as
I understand the organization and existence of my earthly father. That is my opinion about it, and my opinion to
me is just as good as yours is to you; and if you are of the same opinion you
will be satisfied as I am.
I know my heavenly Father and Jesus
Christ whom He has sent, and this is eternal life. And if we will do as we have
been told this morning, if you will enter into the Spirit of your calling, into
the principle of securing to yourselves eternal lives, eternal existence,
eternal exaltation, it will be well with you. But if, after being put into a
carriage and placed upon the road, after having everything prepared for the
journey that infinite wisdom could devise, this people stroll into the swamp,
get into the woods among the brambles and briars, and wander around until night
overtakes them, I say, shame on such people.
I am ashamed to talk about a reformation,
for if you have entered into the spirit of your religion, you will know whether
these things are so or not. If you have the spirit of your religion and have
confidence in you, walk along and continue to do so, and secure to yourselves
the life before you, and never let it be said, from this time henceforth, that
you have wakened out of your sleep, from the fact that you are always awake.
We talk about the reformation, but
recollect that you have only just commenced to walk in the way of life and salvation.
You have just commenced in the career to obtain eternal life, which is that
which you desire, therefore you have no time to spend only in that path. It is
straight and narrow, simple and easy, and is an Almighty path, if you will keep
in it. But if you wander off into swamps, or into brambles, and get into
darkness, you will find it hard to get back.
Brother Cummings told you the truth
this morning with regard to the sins of the people. And I will say that the
time will come, and is now nigh at hand, when those who profess our faith, if
they are guilty of what some of this people are guilty of, will find the axe
laid at the root of the tree, and they will be hewn down. What has been must be
again, for the Lord is coming to restore all things. The time has been in
Israel under the law of God, the celestial law, or that which pertains to the celestial
law, for it is one of the laws of that kingdom where our Father dwells, that if
a man was found guilty of adultery, he must have his blood shed, and that is
near at hand. But now I say, in the name of the Lord, that if this people will
sin no more, but faithfully live their religion, their sins will be forgiven
them without taking life.
You are aware that when brother
Cummings came to the point of loving our neighbours as ourselves, he could say
yes or no as the case might be, that is true. But I want to connect it with the
doctrine you read in the Bible. When will we love our neighbour as ourselves?
In the first place, Jesus said that no man hateth his own flesh. It is admitted
by all that every person loves himself. Now if we do rightly love ourselves, we
want to be saved and continue to exist, we want to go into the kingdom where we
can enjoy eternity and see no more sorrow nor death. This is the desire of
every person who believes in God. Now take a person in this congregation who
has knowledge with regard to being saved in the kingdom of our God and our
Father, and being exalted, one who knows and understands the principles of
eternal life, and sees the beauty and excellency of the eternities before him
compared with the vain and foolish things of the world, and suppose that he is
overtaken in a gross fault, that he has committed a sin that he knows will
deprive him of that exaltation which he desires, and that he cannot attain to
it without the shedding of his blood, and also knows that by having his blood
shed he will atone for that sin, and be saved and exalted with the Gods, is
there a man of woman in this house but what would say, "shed my blood that
I may be saved and exalted with the Gods?"
All mankind love themselves, and
let these principles be known by an individual, and he would be glad to have
his blood shed. That would be loving themselves, even unto an eternal
exaltation. Will you love your brothers or sisters likewise, when they have
committed a sin that cannot be atoned for without the shedding of their blood?
Will you love that man or woman well enough to shed their blood? That is what
Jesus Christ meant. He never told a man or woman to love their enemies in their
wickedness, never. He never intended any such thing; his language is left as it
is for those to read who have the Spirit to discern between truth and error; it
was so left for those who can discern the things of God. Jesus Christ never
meant that we should love a wicked man in his wickedness.
Now take the wicked, and I can
refer to where the Lord had to slay every soul of the Israelites that went out
of Egypt, except Caleb and Joshua. He
slew them by the hands of their enemies, by the plague, and by the sword, why?
Because He loved them, and promised Abraham that He would save them. And He
loved Abraham because he was a friend to his God, and would stick to Him in the
hour of darkness, hence He promised Abraham that He would save his seed. And He
could save them upon no other principle, for they had forfeited their right to
the land of Canaan by transgressing the law of God, and they could not have
atoned for the sin if they had lived. But if they were slain, the Lord could
bring them up in the resurrection, and give them the land of Canaan, and He
could not do it on any other principle.
I could refer you to plenty of
instances where men have been righteously slain, in order to atone for their
sins. I have seen scores and hundreds of people for whom there would have been
a chance (in the last resurrection there will be) if their lives had been taken
and their blood spilled on the ground as a smoking incense to the Almighty, but
who are now angels to the devil, until our elder brother Jesus Christ raises
them up--conquers death, hell, and the grave. I have known a great many men who
have left this Church for whom there is no chance whatever for exaltation, but
if their blood had been spilled, it would have been better for them. The wickedness
and ignorance of the nations forbid this principle's being in full force, but
the time will come when the law of God will be in full force.
This is loving our neighbour as
ourselves; if he needs help, help him; and if he wants salvation and it is necessary
to spill his blood on the earth in order that he may be saved, spill it. Any of
you who understand the principles of eternity, if you have sinned a sin
requiring the shedding of blood, except the sin unto death, would not be
satisfied nor rest until your blood should be spilled, that you might gain that
salvation you desire. That is the way
to love mankind.
Christ and Belial have not become
friends; they have never shaken hands; they never have agreed to be brothers
and to be on good terms; no, never; and they never will, because they are
diametrically opposed to each other. If one conquers, the other is destroyed.
One or the other of them must triumph and utterly destroy and cast down his
opponent. Light and darkness cannot dwell together, and so it is with the
kingdom of God.
Now, brethren and sisters, will you
live your religion? How many hundreds of times have I asked you that question?
Will the Latter-day Saints live their religion? I am ashamed to say anything
about a reformation among Saints, but I am happy to think that the people
called Latter-day Saints are striving now to obtain the Spirit of their calling
and religion. They are just coming into the path, just waking up out of their
sleep. It seems as though they are nearly all like babies; we are but children in
one sense. Now let us begin, like children, and walk in the straight and narrow
path, live our religion, and honour our God.
With these remarks, I pray the God
of Israel to bless you forever and ever, for you are the best people on earth.
I can say that I am happy that you are doing so well as you are. Continue to
increase in all the graces of God's Spirit until the day of His coming, which I
desire with all my heart, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Kingdom or Nothing!!
—COMMENTARY—
ON
PREPARING
As I sat here trying to decide what
to write, and let alone what to call this brief article, I had some ideas being
blown around to and fro, dancing in lazy circles within my mind, like the dust
bunnies that swirl in corners when a door is opened. But one idea was about preparing, and that
one action verb encompasses quite a bit.
We profess to be Latter-day Saints,
and these latter days in which we live, we see the economy in a tumult—we hear
reports that government stimuli are helping the economy, but see gas prices
rising, food costs rising, and the packaging of these products shrinking in
size, we hear of wars and rumors of wars, and feel something big about to
happen on the horizon. And I’m not just
writing about us. Gentiles, too, feel
ominous change about to interrupt our lives like a punch in the face. We hear hushed reports on the web about
conspiracy theories, like the covert efforts to devaluate the US dollar to
implement of a cashless card, then ultimately a computer chip embedded beneath
our skin. And we hear of concentration
camps being built in remote regions of the United States, being staffed by UN
troops, to herd the populace into compliance and compulsion. We see political parties bickering like
children in a school yard, stirring up distrust and resentment and opposition toward
one another. We hear of grand schemes
from secret societies wanting to dominate the world.
And possibly, there may be some
kernels of truth in these theories. What
you and I can do, is begin preparing. In
short: Prepare for the Apocalypse.
“Where does one begin?”
Start. Storing. Food.
“But I can’t afford additional costs—my budget won’t allow it.”
Then start eliminating unnecessary “wants” of your life. Do you really need to go spend fifty bucks golfing next Saturday? Do you really need to take the kids to see the latest Harry Potter and spend nearly $75 with ticket and concession prices? Do you really need that $150 bottle of Abercrombie and Fitch perfume? Do you really need that $200 Dolce purse? Do you really need that 55” flat screen TV that just became available at an “affordable” $800?

I just want you to think about
these things if you haven’t, yet. What
will you tell your shivering child when he tells you he’s hungry, while that
flat screen TV hangs above you from the wall reflecting the uncaring sunlight
as dust settles upon its cold surface?
These unnecessary costs could go
towards budgeting for food storage.
There’s plenty of help one can find on-line on how to begin food
storage, and not just food—sanitary things like, deodorant, diapers, toilet
paper, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc.
And extra clothing, winter wear, tents, and things you could
barter. There are also programs
available to help people budget their dollars.
Start a garden and learn to grow
vegetables and fruits to can. Learn to
butcher and preserve meat. Learn to make
cheese and yogurts. Learn to tan hides
and make leather. Learn to inventory and
rotate your storage. Learn to protect
these investments and commodities. Learn
to survive.
Your life could depend on it.
